Introduction
Hello! Welcome to the Horrible Histories WW2 website where you will be able to experience what it was really like living and taking part in the Second World War. In this website, you can: play games; watch real life videos of the horrific action and read Diaries and Accounts of soldiers who fought in the war to help you understand how ordinary people coped with the trauma that they endured in their daily lives.
Why did the second world war start?
Due to the horrific effects of the first world war, no one really expected another world war to shortly follow however despite this, most people later on believe that the second world war was the secondary effect of the First world war. After the first world war, a treaty known as the treaty of Versailles was created to punish Germany because of the misery and chaos it had brought about in the war. Germany was mainly blamed for the war taking place and this had made them extremely angry as land and armed forces had to be given up.
In 1933, Adolf Hitler who led a political party known as the 'Nazis' came into power as he promised to make his country great again by taking back lost land, creating millions of jobs and rebuilding a huge army. He has invaded many countries but the Second World War really began when Hitler took a step too far, causing the British prime minister at the time Neville Chamberlain to declare war on Germany. Once Hitler's army had grown fully and had regrouped, there was no stopping him when it came to taking back his lost land. Not only did he do this but he gained more land to expand his empire. He made extremely fast progress taking over whole countries in days or weeks. Countries such as Denmark had given in straightway. Norway and Belgium fought bravely but stood no chance against Hitler's army as Belgium was taken over in 18 days. France a country like Germany in terms of size was taken over in 6 weeks .Czechoslovakia was a new and powerful country who had the support of the soviet union but they were also defeated by Hitler by March 1939. This just goes to show that he was unstoppable at the time no matter what. In total, Hitler during the world war had taken over 17 countries with 5 allies (Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Finland.)
